A southern white rhinoceros at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The rhinos have been successfully bred in captivity. The S.D.W.A.P., often referred to as the " zoo of the future", allows animals to roam freely on 2,000 acres around the foo thills of San Diego County. Free reign of the land permits the animals to live in a simulate d environment, which is more closely related to their natural ark and breeding ground. The park houses 325 species of birds and 125 species of mammals; 41 of these species are endangered. Copyright: National Geographic / Michael Nichols
