Johnnie Johnson took command of No. 144 Wing (Canadians) based at RAF Kenley in February 1943. Spitfire Mk. IX EN398 became his regular mount. Being a Wing Commander now meant his initials could be painted on the machine. His Spitfires now carried JE-J. His call sign was given as "Greycap". During the six months of flying with EN398, Johnson had shot down 12 enemy aircraft, sharing the destruction of 5 more.
