I show you this picture, not because it is great art, but because this bird is so rare that most American birders and ornithologists thought it was extinct! In the United States, there are only records in the Pacific Northwest, and in Arizona. This male showed up at Gilbert Water Ranch, west of Phoenix, Arizona, in December 2010, and stayed for about three weeks. It is a dabbling duck, which means it uses its bill to gather food from close to the surface of the water. These birds normally live in Siberia, and winter in Viet Nam and surrounding countries. Anas formosa.
