„Leaving Rhodes Harbour“

Picture ID: ee57caf
Description:

Taken from a Ferry on the way out of Rhodes Harbour on the beautiful Greek Island of Rhodes.

On the left is the remains of the Tower of Naillac which along with the Tower of the Mills controlled the entrance to the commercial harbour of Rhodes. The Tower of Naiilac was demolished by an earthquake and only it’s base survives.

On the far right is the Fortress of St. Nicholas, at the entrance to Mandraki Harbour (the main harbour of Rhodes for almost 2,500 years).

In the middle of the image, at the other side of Mandraki Harbour is the Church of the Annunciation (the cathedral of Rhodes) and its Campanile Tower.

Between the Church of the Annunciation and the Fortress of St. Nicholas, on the long breakwater front at Mandraki stand the three medieval windmills which ground the grain unloaded from merchant vessels in the harbour.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands.
