A southern white rhino at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The S.D.W.A.P., often referred to as the "zoo of the future", allows animals to roam freely on 2,000 acres around the foothills of San Diego County. Free reign of the land permit s the animals to live in a simulated environment, which is more closely related to their natu ral ark and breeding ground. The park houses 325 species of birds and 125 spec ies of mammals; 41 of these species are endangered. Copyright: National Geographic / Michael Nichols
