This is a photograph of a Red Spotted Purple Butterfly that I added some textures, vignette, and other creative work to. I spotted it on a bush in our yard this past summer. These are beautiful butterflies with wingspans of 2 1/2" to 4". They are usually an iridescent blue with red spots or purples areas at the tip of each wing.

The underside of the wings are black with a white stripe down the middle and red spots on the rest of the wings. Both adults look the same other than the female is a little larger. These butterflies will fly from dawn until dusk and their host plant is usually a birch tree.
