Das Rostocker Steintor wurde erstmals 1279 als gotisches Tor errichtet. Es war das Haupttor zur Rostocker Altstadt und führte direkt zum Marktplatz mit dem Rathaus. 1566 wurde das Steintor auf Geheiß Johann Albrecht I., Herzog von Mecklenburg, abgerissen und durch ein neues ersetzt, dass zwischen 1574 und 1577 entstand.
