Creating art is a compulsion, not a choice for an artist. At the call of their muse, the art will flow, turning a blank sheet into a vision of worlds yet unseen. For Patricia Carlson, this muse resides in nature, peeking out through the tall old trees that vibrate with wisdom, wafting through the air with the fragrance of roses and rain. Her watercolors are a reflection of her ties with the great living breathing earth that cycles around her. Sometimes it is a moment of captured beauty that the rest of the world would have missed in our efforts to push through our busy lives, other times Patricia’s work gives us a glimpse of a world we never could have seen at all, a magic in nature that exists just below the surface. The compulsion of an artist is to take the world they see and feel, and bring it to light for all to see, and for Patricia, this world is our own, only so much more beautiful.
Patricia Allingham Carlson watercolor and mixed media paintings are of real and imagined people and places. The paintings are frequently textural, suggesting multiple layers of images through time. Ancient scenes, structures, people from long ago, and other realms weave through many of these paintings. Patricia hides faces and figures in her Dreamscape paintings as subtle representations of the life spirits in living and inanimate subjects. Or perhaps as the impression left by those who passed the scene long ago
Landscapes are paintings stolen from the beautiful and rich sights I have seen, walked through, and experienced. These scenes are my efforts to recapture what I have so enjoyed being in , and to share with others. The natural beauty of the world is captured in these landscapes, sometimes brighter and more dazzling that life; real scenery from national parks and long country drives re-created in watercolor and collage, fleeting glimpses of the glory of the earth sealed forever with paint and paper. Vibrant depictions of forests, waterfalls, hills, and valleys are a personal view into the natural world.
These are paintings evoked entirely by imaginings, and spring spontaneously to the paper through squinted eye and dreaming mind. Some far away and long ago, some are created by wishes of what could be. Inspired by great stories and pure imagination, these fantasy artwork provides sweeping creativity on the subject of magic kingdoms and fairy queens. The dreams of great writers and poets, the epic adventures of heroes and sages, and the wishes of young children, caught in brilliant color and the unique perspective of the artist.
This series is inspired by the idea of animal helpers of legend origin. Each creature is presented in a respectful celebration of its being, and then bordered by nature signs and symbols. In some stories and legends animals provide help in seeking a higher power and living harmoniously with the earth. The Children of the Earth is a celebration of these creatures, created with special technique. This series sets them in color, framed with symbols of their nature and their mission.
The diversity and beauty of the peoples and creations of other cultures than mine are a source of my painting inspiration. Through historical research and my imagination I try to honor them in these artworks. Cultures are the color of humanity, providing the diversity and beauty in all different forms. The magic, myths and history of various cultures have inspired many of these collages and watercolors, compelling her to produce portraits of life and legends from the societies and customs she has come to learn about.
The intricate and sometimes exuberant beauty of flowers is a source of inspiration for these paintings. This aspect of nature is enjoyed by many, as gardeners love to share their riches. The bounty of nature, flowers and floral arrangements pop with life and color. Whether it is portraying a garden scene or an abstract view of their beauty, these watercolor and collage floral sparkle with the bright hues the gardeners aspire to. Her brilliant flowers bloom with life and clarity, down to the smallest detail.
Observing the creatures of the earth is an honor we are lucky to enjoy. My paintings attempt to capture their splendor and personalities. The creatures of earth, both big and small, spring to life in these watercolors and collages. Attracted to the vibrant colors and textures of various animals such and koi, peacocks, and tigers, Carlson’s artwork captures not only the beauty of her subjects but also their personalities.
Dreamscapes are landscapes of the imagination, compilations of places seen, imagined and wished for. Many of these paintings have touches of "magic" with sparkles, orbs, and hidden pictures of people and places. Dreamscapes are a specialty for Patricia Carlson, as her unique point of view is able to translate the world between reality and imagination and turn it into artwork. Landscapes both real and imagined, drifting through time and echoing with the ghosts of what may have been, and what still remains just beneath the surface.
