This door somehow reminds me of the times of the Italian Occupation of the island of Rhodes 1912-1943. There used to be an airfield at the village of Maritsa and the village was breaming with Italian soldiers. Polite and charming, they would ask for permission to enter a house, even if they wanted to search it for resistance fighters or contraband.
"Am I Permitted?" is the strict translation of the Italian "Permesso?".
