Ethiopia, Welo Province, Aysaita. Warriors of the nomadic Afar tribe wear their hair long and carry large curved daggers, known as jile, strapped to their waists. Proud and fiercely independent, they live in the low-lying deserts of Eastern Ethiopia. Many Ethiopians from the Highlands fear them. Modern rifles have now replaced daggers as weapons although most young men still wear ornate daggers by tradition.
