„Billy the Kid“

from the gallery of Robert Lacy

Billy the Kid is probably the most famous outlaw in the world even though his life was snuffed out at the young age of 21. He lived and died by the gun. Only one authenticated photographic portrait is known to exist, an old ferrotype photo, which was most probably taken a year or two before his death in 1881. Like others before me, I have relied on the photograph to try and bring Billy back to life on canvas and hopefully catch something of his personality in the process. Despite his fearsome reputation as a gunman he was remembered well by all those friends and acquaintences who survived him. He was commonly described as a cheerful, happy-go-lucky young man who was fearsome if crossed but intensely loyal to his friends.
