In Karakul, high on the plateau of the Pamirs in Tajikistan at an altitude of 3900m, the sun can be bright, but also, due to the thinner atmosphere, quite harsh.
The dog has found a cozy place and is basking in the sun - its pelt protecting its skin from the sun. Farther back, a wooden gate to a courtyard is standing open, and we can see people inside. The little girl is sensibly wearing a sun hat, protecting her face from the harsh sunshine.
I've seen many children in Tajikistan with what looked like a skin disease on their faces: a result of constant exposure to the sun at high altitude. So it was good to see this little girl wearing protection.
