„Jungle Medicine Woman “

from the gallery of Sara Baga

Hand made acquarelle and china ink.
Second from the series of "Green Woman". Made as I came back from a journey to Guinea-Bissau in Spring 2013. Conected to the knowledge of medicine of wild forest plants in the tropics, now getting lost as tribal forest people move to the cities. Many African peoples regard the earth as a female deity, a mother-goddess who rules all people and is the mother of all creatures. She will make the grass grow when heaven gives her rain and if there is no rain, she withdraws into her own depths, waiting for better times to come. The Earth conceals life, protects it against desiccation and revives it as soon as better times arrive. Without the gifts of the Earth no one lives.
Associated to the female deities Gaia, Yoruba Aja: Orisha of the forest, the animals within it, and herbal healing; as well as with general feminine energy djins/irãs/fairies of the forest.
