„Karakul's dining room“

from the gallery of Marjolein Katsma
Description:

However remote Karakul is, high on the plateau of the Pamirs in Tajikistan, it is near the Pamir Highway (or vice versa). One house not far from the road sports a big sign reading "*????????*" (pronounced 'stolóvaya') in big shiny red letters: that's Russian for 'dining room', or 'eatery'. Our home stay hosts fed us well, so we didn't try this out, but from travelers' accounts I gather this is indeed a simple eating place, much like a Tajik living room, where one can get a tasty home-cooked meal.

Excellent image, Marjolein, in composition, subject, and color capture.

Thank you very much, Ron, for the like and your nice comment! Karakul, an extremely remote village, is fascinating and the light - partly due to the thin atmosphere at 3900m - was fantastic. I only had a few hours to walk around but would love to go back one day and stay a week...
