Moscow Novodevichy Convent - 5. Assumption Church as an example of the Russian baroque architectural style. Novodevichy (New Maidens') Convent of Moscow, Russia, in summer, 2014. The convent was founded in 1524 to commemorate the capture of the city of Smolensk in 1514. It served as a fortress to defend Moscow from the south. The convent hosted a number of ladies of royal and aristocratic families of Russia, including the sister and the first wife of the Peter the Great. The convent was closed in 1922, but Moscow Theological Institute was opened in its premises in 1943. The fortress was also used as a museum. In 1994 the convent was reopened. So the territory is used both for religious and cultural purposes. The Novodevichy Convent is also famous for its cemetery which is the most prestigious cemetery in Russia. For example, Nikita Khrushchev, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Konstantin Stanislavski, Boris Yeltsin, and Mstislav Rostropovich were buried there. The convent is registered in UNESCO world heritage list.
