„Salt storage“

from the gallery of Marjolein Katsma

Near Marakkanam, just a little north of Pondicherry, there are extensive salt pans where salt is produced in shallow ponds by letting the sea water evaporate.

When we arrived, the place was deserted, but the constructions were interesting. Here we see a mound of salt, completely covered with a thick, waterproof layer of reeds, fixed in place with some (hand-made) rope, and surrounded by a 'fence' of branches to keep wandering goats and cows out. It looks quite simple, but actually building such a roof requires considerable skill.
