„Shed wall“

from the gallery of Marjolein Katsma

Near Marakkanam, just a little north of Pondicherry, there are extensive salt pans where salt is produced in shallow ponds by letting the sea water evaporate.

Near the mounds of salt under their reed covers was a little building, apparently used to store equipment, with 'woven walls': constructed from wood frame, with 'planks' made of woven palm leaves fastened to it with sticks and hand-made rope.

Just as the covers for the mounds of salt, the overhanging roof is made of a thick layer or reeds: such a roof keeps out the rain, while the woven walls provide enough ventilation to keep the interior rather cool: local materials and technology perfectly adapted to hot and humid South India.
