„Silvacane III“

from the gallery of Werner Schmitz-Lechtape

susurrating water - singing stones
Silvacane, Thoronet, Senanque, these austerely beautiful cistercian abbeys make you catch your breaths. You could not have imagined such simplicity and spiritual beauty built in stone. Silvacane lies on the left bank of the Durance river. It is the most recent of the three Cistercian abbeys in Provence and the only one that has not continued its monastic activity. The name comes from the Latin "silva cannorum" (forest of reeds). When the monks first settled here, they had to drain swamps before they could build the abbey (begin in 1174) and grow crops, hence the reference to reeds.
