Anke Eissmann

Anke Katrin Eissmann (born 1977) is a German illustrator and graphic designer. She studied visual communication at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany and at the Colchester Institute in the United Kingdom. She has also made a number of short films. She currently teaches art at Johanneum Gymnasium (high school) in Herborn, Germany, as well as working as an freelance illustrator for several international publishers.

Her early inspiration was drawn from works by J.R.R. Tolkien, such as The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings. While studying in Weimar, she began to publish her illustrations on the internet, which put her into contact with Tolkien fandom. She is an active member of the German Tolkien Society, currently responsible for layouting their journal. Artistically, she is influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, book-illustrators like Arthur Rackham, Edmond Dulac, Ivan Bilibin and Alan Lee, Art Nouveau, artists like Edward Hopper and Jan Vermeer. She also has a strong interest in film and cinematography.

Apart from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, much of her work is focused on mythological and historical themes. Her preferred mediums are pencil and watercolour.
