Joseph Mallord William Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner, englischer Maler der romantischen Malerei, wurde am 23. April 1775 in London geboren.
William Turner erhielt seine Ausbildung ab 1789 an der Royal Academy und fertigte erste Landschaftsskizzen nach dem Vorbild von John Robert Cozens an. Philippe Jaques de Loutherbourg lehrte William Turner die Technik der Ölmalerei. Ein bevorzugtes Motiv für seine Landschaftsmalerei war die Isle of Wight in Südengland. 1797 beendete William Turner "Mondschein bei Millbank", wenige Jahre später trat William Turner eine Reise durch die Schweiz an. Inspiriert durch Naturmotive folgten Turners Arbeiten "St.-Gotthard-Paß" (1802) und "Die Lawine" (1810). 1808 begann Turner mit einer Serie über Themse- Landschaften. Es folgten Reisen nach Rotterdam, Rom, Venedig und Neapel. Arbeiten dieser Jahre waren: "Brand des Londoner Parlamentes", "La dogana di Mare" und "Am Abend der Sintflut".
Nach einer weiteren Reise in die Schweiz (1841-1842) kehrte William Turner zurück nach London, wo er am 19. Dezember 1851 starb.
