„Red Bellied Woodpecker“

from the gallery of Gena Weiser
Description:

The red bellied woodpecker pictured here is a frequent visitor of my yard. The telephone poles are proof to show it. These woodpeckers breed in southern Canada and the Northeastern United States and live as far south as Florida and and as far west as Texas. You will sometimes see these woodpeckers with food in its mouth and take it to a tree and pound it into a crevice to retrieve later in the year. They eat insects, an occasional lizard, nuts, suet, and on rare occasions they will eat plant life.
An interesting fact about the red bellied woodpecker is that they can stick out there tongue 2 inches past their beak and have prickly barbs on the end and their spit is also sticky.
The lay their eggs in nest cavities in trees, fence posts, and yes; telephone poles. They typically will use the same hole year after year, but have also been known to make a new cavity below the previous one each year.
