Die Mariendistel ist eine bis zu 150 Zentimeter hohe Pflanze und kommt vor allem im Mittelmeerraum vor. Seit der Antike wird sie als Heilmittel eingesetzt. Anfangs erst gegen Schlangenbisse und zur Anregung des Gallenflusses, seit dem Mittelalter zur Behandlung von Lebererkrankungen.
