from the gallery of Ian Lewis
Description:

Looking across the moat at Caerphilly Castle to its massive south facing walls and towers. The castle was built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn ap Gruffudd, Begun in 1268 - it was immediately attacked! Building was recommenced in 1271 and it is now the largest castle in ground area in Wales and the second largest castle in Britain!
