Dawn over the New Zealand Alps. This photo was taken from, I believe, the west end of Lake Matheson, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. We spent the night at the campgrounds near one of the glaciers on the west coast, and got up super early to get this photo. It required an approximately 1 hour walk, as I remember, to get to the west end of the lake, on order to get there in time to witness this spectacular sunrise. Fortunately, this was the middle of winter, so sunrise was not too early.
The photo was taken on the Indo-Australian Plate, looking across the Alpine Fault to the NZ Alps, which are on the Pacific Plate.
