Denver is since 1876 the capital of the state of Colorado, on the western edge of the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.
Denver City was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory and named after James W. Denver, governor of the Kansas territory. He visited the city a few times, but complained, that it did not draw much attention to the inhabitants of the city named after him.
