Das Foto zeigt die geologisch besonders interessante Formation Devils`s Marbles im Northern Territory Australien. Die Formen entstehen durch Verwitterung (sog. Vergrusen) und Wind-Erosion, während die Erosion durch Wasser wegen des ariden Wüstenklimas kaum stattfindet. Die rote Färbung des Gesteins entsteht durch ein Eisenoxid, sogenanntes Hämatit.
