„Fere Mere, Monyash“

from the gallery of Rod Johnson
Description:

Fere Mere at Monyash in Derbyshire, England. This mere or pond is a very attractive feature and is the only one remaining of the original four meres.

Monyash was an important centre for lead mining in the Peak District and in 1340, a charter was granted to hold a weekly market and also a fair, with the aim of encouraging the lead mining industry. Until more recent times, Fere Mere was the source of drinking water for the village.

The distant church spire of St Leonard's can be seen above the tree tops.
