In today’s fractured world, hope is an increasingly ephemeral commodity. At times it appears to be on permanent life support. And yet, hope springs eternal even when it is constantly being battered by waves that only seem to become more intense with the passage of time — the assault on our planet’s environment, the threat of extinction for countless species, the recrudescence of nationalistic, fascist tendencies in countries with long-standing democratic traditions, the exponential rise in the number of stateless refugees in search of a life free of economic uncertainty, persecution and oppression — the list is a long one. And so we cling to hope and, to the extent that it is possible, nurse it back to a state of health that will propel humanity forward.
