Watercolour and ink travel sketch painting in impressionist expressionist style of a fish market in a street of Palermo in Sicily, done on site during during a 2 week painting trip to Sicily in May 2014

Very special in Palermo, and in fact everywhere I was in Sicily, were the fish stalls. Normally, I don't go 1 kilometre close to any fish shop, I can't stand the smell and the sight of dead fish. I have been a scuba diver for a long time, have observed many hours all the fishes underwater, have even played with them, and can't stand any more to see them dead above water...

But in Sicily, these shops and stalls were so impressive, that I could not help going closer, and even sketch them. Somehow the dead fishes did seem so alive!
