Description:

On the Avon, very close to where it joins the Severn at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. Just further upstream is the severn-Avon lock which enables boats to travel upriver towards Shakespeare's Stratford. This was a strategic position to b establish this ancient town as the two rivers act as a defensive moat. The Battle of Tewkesburyin 1471 was decisive in the Wars of the Roses, the Yorkist leader becoming King Edward IV.
