Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy are fictional characters created by American writer Johnny Gruelle (1880 to 1938) in a series of books he wrote and illustrated for young children. Raggedy Ann is a rag doll with red yarn for hair and a triangle nose. The character was created in 1915 as a doll, and was introduced to the public in the 1918 book Raggedy Ann Stories. A doll was also marketed along with the book to great success. A sequel, Raggedy Andy Stories (1920) introduced the character of her brother, Raggedy Andy, dressed in sailor suit and hat.
................................................This original piece was created by hand with much love. Pictures from antique children's books dated 1915, 1918 and 1920, were used to create a collage of the nanny reading to Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann in the garden. Andy holds a sun umbrella to shade himself and his sister.
................................................ Once the pieces were assembled, the edges were smoothed and focus was added by drawing using pen and ink. Skin tones were painted by hand with watercolor. The result was something wonderful - the paper is over 100 years old - and the historical flavor of the books (as well as the age of the pages) adds a delicate overall tone to the art piece, a work meticulously created from over fifty tiny fragile antique pieces ... old fashioned, whimsical, comfortable, vintage, antique, inviting, and lovable. A treasure of days gone by.
................................................ A wonderful gift for lovers of dolls and storybooks, students of doll history, or Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy collectors.
