In 1512, the artist Raphael was commissioned to paint a Madonna for the Sistine Chapel. The final work was truly a masterpiece, but the most enduring characters in the painting were not the Madonna, Saint Sixtus, or Saint Barbara, but the pair of cherubs included at the bottom, looking up. These two figures have permeated popular culture for centuries, becoming classic Pop Art subjects. The first of the two cherubs.
