Howdy Norbert,
At the edge of the dry lake there is a cliff where rocks loosened by weather tumble down onto the playa. In winter there will occasionally be a rainstorm which makes the clay playa soft and when the temperature drops, the water on the surface freezes capturing the rocks in the ice. Then when strong winds come up, the ice moves across the slick surface, dragging the rocks. When the playa dries out, it shrinks and cracks into the pattern seen in the image and gets hard. No one has witnessed this happen but there is not other explanation. This location is in a remote part of Death Valley National Park with a long very rough road leading to it.

Peace,
Ed
