Ihr Name geht über türkisch tülbend auf persisch dulband zurück und bezeichnete ursprünglich einen Turban. Wahrscheinlich erfolgte die Bedeutungsübertragung des Begriffs wegen der Farb- und Gestaltähnlichkeit der Tulpen zu den damals üblichen Turbantüchern vornehmer Osmanen.
