Yellowstone Lake is the largest high altitude freshwater lake in the United States. Covering 136 square miles, and more tha 7 thousand feet above sea level, the lake is frozen over for most of the year.

This shot was taken in late May – when nearby Utah just a few hundred miles away is basking in 90 degree heat. But the mountains and volcanic caldera of Yellowstone are still locked in the icy maw of winter, waiting for the brief spring thaw and the glorious colourburst of the area’s spectacular summer.
