I live in Germany and I finished my first oil painting at the age of fifteen. Drawing and painting became a part of my live. Inspired by the Dutch beach and the Mediterranean landscape I first focused on scenery painting.
From 2011 to 2017 I have lived in Nanjing and Shanghai (China) and was studying Chinese painting. First by Chen Jie, a master in traditional Chinese painting. 2015 I moved to Shanghai and continued my studies of traditional Chinese painting using different techniques.

I grew up in switzerland and south africa .. my mother tongue is english, but my native swiss dialect I only learnt once I started school – as my 3rd language. I have lived many years in asia but once the children had to start school we returned to switzerland. The past 20 years I lived first in germany, then in hungary... I live in thun switzerland since mid 2017.

I always loved art ... as I child I could easily be made happy by giving me pencils, crayons and lots of paper and I could draw and scribble for hours. However when I wanted to join the art academy my parents did not think that this was a good idea.. instead I was told to learn a “proper” profession.

After a very serious car accident I re-discovered art... for many years afterwards I created digital art and did photography until a watercolour artist friend of mine in the USA encouraged me to try “traditional” art. At first I was very insecure, studied and read many books on techniques and materials, I started to experiment and try out various techniques until I discovered “my” style .. intuitive art, mostly in mixed media with collage elements.

My art – as my life – is very colourful, full of symbols and symbolism, the collective unconscious, dreams, travels, emotions are the themes of my art, my art can be loud, it can scream, cry, laugh, it can be full of humour, strong, and tenderly gentle – and it is always one thing – full of emotions.

aufgewachsen bin ich in der schweiz und südafrika... meine muttersprache ist englisch, züridüütsch lernte ich erst, als ich zur schule ging – als 3. sprache. ich habe mehrere jahre in asien gelebt, als dann die kinder zur schule mussten, sind wir in die schweiz zurück gekehrt. die letzten 20 jahre verbrachte ich zuerst in deutschland, danach in ungarn.. in thun lebe ich seit 2017.

der kunst gehörte schon immer meine liebe... als kind konnte man mich ganz einfach glücklich machen.. in dem man mir stifte in die hand drückte und papier gab auf dem ich mich austoben konnte. mit kunstschule war dann aber nichts, meine eltern fanden ich sollte einen “anständigen” beruf erlernen.

durch einen schweren verkehrsunfall kehrte ich dann zur kunst zurück bzw entdeckte sie wieder.. zuerst widmete ich viele jahre der digitalen kunst und der fotografie, bis ich dann – ermutigt durch eine künstlerfreundin in usa – die “traditionelle”kunst in “angriff” nahm. zuerst nur sehr zögerlich, ich las bücher über techniken, probierte, experimentierte und endlich schien ich das für mich richtige gefunden zu haben. das intuitive malen, meist in mischtechnik mit collage einlagen.

passend zu meinem leben sind meine bilder sehr bunt, voller symbole und symbolik, das kollektive unbewusste, träume, reisen, gefühle sind die themen meiner bilder. meine kunst kann laut sein, schreien, weinen, lachen, sie kann humorvoll, stark und zärtlich sanft sein, eines ist sie immer – voller emotionen.

When I left a Munich advertising studio for Ireland, I dreamed of cheap whisky, hot geysers and a little adventure. Wrong. Very wrong indeed! The whiskey was expensive, the hot springs were in Iceland and the little adventure developed into a big adventure....... The land and it’s people were fascinating right from the beginning and after learning a few words of the English language, tinted with an Irish flavour, mind and soul were cleared of orderly Teutonic perceptions. The wind blew away the acquired photographic rules to let grey skies and green meadows convert easily into stunning pictures. The adventure was in full swing and I never missed the Bavarian studio.

Since then I have travelled to many exotic countries. During 1973, in recognition of my work, I was awarded the honours of a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (F.R.P.S.). In 1982 I started to build up my own Picture Library (nagelestock.com) and for commercial reasons, moved to England. Here I soon discovered the Highland of Scotland which has so much in common with the Emerald Isle. The sunny beaches of exotic tourist destinations did not tempt me, hence it is no surprise that I still have not got around to buying a sensible sunshade for my camera. Instead of a sunshade I placed many other astonishing, yet creative ‘bits’ in front of my lenses in order to manipulate my work within the camera. Deception by photography ?

Then came the pixels: Rather than being satisfied with retouching existing photographs, I went in at the deep end and experimented with many different digital styles. The painted effects, created with the help of PhotoShop and Painter software, give a new meaning to "painting with light". Here, photography drifts into virtual painting and with each controlled brushstroke new ideas are opened up.

Mankind expressed creativity in the Stone Ages with a few colours derived from nature itself. The palette of shades evolved over centuries, today even the smallest of home computer, iThingy or smart phone lay claim to "millions of colours". Thus in photography, it is not the camera that creates the picture, but the person behind it - the computer technology is simply a medium helping us to express ourselves in ways we could have never envisaged a few years ago. May my selection of images cross barriers of language and culture, offering only inspiration.
