Q: You have been working on the topic rainforest and indigenous people for more then 10 years. What prompted you to take up this subject?

SYLVIE PROIDL: In 92 I saw my first tropical rainforest in Trinidad and it was love at first sight. The environment was absolutely enchanting and the beauty of this lush world struck me. My artistic route crystallized.

I began with large-format rainforests paintings in oil and pastel that represent indoor jungles. Over time, this gradually shifted to more conceptual projects and installations on endangered ecosystems. This orientation has changed little since then, although the artistic tools I use have expanded considerably.

Q: What is the process behind your work? How do you pinpoint an issue and develop the artistic expression?

SYLVIE PROIDL: For me, this involves two I’s: Inspiration and Intuition. My inner feeling guides me and has never let me down in pre-selecting from all the inputs that I read, hear, see or dream about. On the other hand, in some of my projects, the location defines the approach and determines the artistic medium. In the palmhouse of Schönbrunn Palace, for example, the materials had to withstand the high humidity, and the selected medium ended up supporting the desired atmosphere perfectly.
The goal in every case is to touch the viewer’s soul. This is always the best way to transport art and convey a message. I want my art to go straight to the heart and nowhere else. And I’m the one who get the greatest kick when it works.
