„Kabuki Actor Ichikawa Danjuro II“

Über dieses Bild:

This painting is a variation on an Edo period Japanese woodcut by Torii Kiyotada from 1715 AD. It features the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II (1688–1758) in a “Shibaraku!” role. This is actually the second version I have painted of this particular image; the first was in the early 90s, when I lived in the Punk Loft on Cermak on Chicago’s South Side. That version was painted on the wall of my bedroom and was about 12 feet tall... after I moved out, my roommates extricated the painting by cutting it out of the wall (the complete drywall panels with the stud bracing), but unfortunately, it was too large to fit out any of the doors and had to be left behind. This version is much smaller, of course, and is painted on traditional stretched canvas. Like many of my recent paintings, it has a few touches of iridescent gold and silver paint – in the letters that spell out the actor’s name, as well as the handles of the swords.
