Four small boys look out to sea from where they sit on a bamboo fishing boat on the Praia das Burros on the island of Principé. Praia das Burros means beach of stupid people. It was named this because it was first settled by runaway slaves, and no one believed they would survive there - and of course they did. Sao Tomé and Principé is Africa's second smallest country with a population of 193 000. It consists of two mountainous islands in the Gulf of New Guinea, straddling the equator, west of Gabon. Principé is the smaller of the two islands with a population of around 5000.
