The first in a series of waterfalls as the River Ure tumbles over rocks at Aysgarth in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire seen from the road bridge just below the car park and visitors' centre and church. There are three sets of falls of which this is the first or upper. Altogether they stretch for about a mile. They are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest - as well as being a favourite site for film scenes! The name apparently comes from the Norse meaning 'an open space in the oak trees'
