The formidable gatehouse at Caerphilly Castle in South Wales. Caerphilly Castle, or Castell Caerfili in Welsh, is situated in the centre of the town. It dates from the 13th century when it was constructed by Gilbert de Clare as a means of conquering Glamorgan and is one of the earliest concentric castles in Britain. It is surrounded by defensive lakes which form the moat over which a bridge leads to this, the main gatehouse.
