THE GIANT RED BRICK LIGHTHOUSE AND ATTACHED DOUBLE KEEPER's COTTAGES HAVE STOO D SINCE 1873 ATOP MOHEGAN BLUFFS ON BLOCK ISLAND's SOUTH SHORE. EVEN THEN, LOCA LS ADVISED AGAINST THE SITE BECAUSE OF EROSION CAUSED BY THE POUNDING SURF AND THE FRESH WATER THAT LEAKED THROUGH THE CLIFFS FROM THE AQUIFIER. (THERE USE TO BE A BASE BALL FIELD AND COW PASTURE IN THE FRONT YARD.) BUILT AT A COST OF $75,000, THE TOWER HOUSES AN AWESOME, FIRST ORDER FRESNEL LENS (THE LARGEST OF THE GREAT 19T H CENTURY FRENCH CRYSTAL LENSES) REVOLVING SMOOTHLY ON A GREAT BED OF MERCURY--IT IS ONE OF THE PRIMARY LIGHTS ON THE EAST COAST. IT IS ESTIMATED TO COST $2 MILLION TO MOVE AND RESTORE THE LIGHTHOUSE. THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUTHEAST LIGHT PRESERVATION GROUP HAS ALREADY COMMISSIONED GEOTECHNICAL AND ENGINEERING FEASIBILITY STUDIES, THAT PR OVED THE LIGHTHOUSE COULD BE MOVED BACK SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET TO A SAFE SITE. 8 7-256-03 Copyright: National Geographic / Michael Nichols
