Amanda Fraser- New York, Melbourne artist. Works in Melbourne, Australia and New York, USA. Amanda studied and graduated from Victoria College of the Arts, Melbourne in 1994 and majored in Drawing. From there she has explored the properties of printmaking, sign writing and painting in her career to express tonal and strong visual lines which characterise her style. “I learned by constant work how to crawl into a painting.”
Amanda produces contemporary work which is challenging and emblematic that includes subjects of figurative, landscape, the nude, beachscapes, cityscapes and abstractions. The subject matter is centred around travel and still-life and investigates other issues beyond the obvious which refer to abstraction and expressionism. Subject matter is inherent in all the works. It represents who she is now.Her works explore form, structure and enigmatic symbols.
She is interested in the environment and inner hermetic sources. Amanda's images are symbolic exercises in communication. In a progression from predominantly monochromatic work of the past, she is now embracing colour in order to enhance the expression of form and its structure in her work. “ I have been true to myself in this world.”
Using experimental techniques she explores the potential of the image and its possibilities. Amanda is seeking emphatic images, dishing and dealing with chance and working with materials that are fluid. There is no space for error. Colours are of personal significance and are kept clean and are highly evocative.
Amanda's work is collected and commissioned both nationally and internationally with exhibitions in New York, London and Melbourne.
“My work is open to you.” AF
