I come from an immigrant family and grew up in Germany. In my life it was essential for me to experience the opportunities and limitations that you have in a western industrialized society as a male ‘guest workers child’ and the fact that it enabled an academic career and a rise from the working class. In my paintings I am working with social restrictions and conventions whose origin can be found in familial and historical roots and influence our behaviour and perception consciously and unconsciously, as well as with the essence of a free society whose fundamental principles allow self-realization and the overcome of social boundaries, but also include standards and guidelines of economic progress and wealth that limits individual self-realization. The more restrictive these limits are, the lower the possibilities of the people will be to use and to develop their individual skills and to fulfil themselves, to act independently and to contribute to the prosperity and life quality of their society. In that kind of society it is the challenge to its people to develop self-awareness and authenticity, not to allow to be limited by the assessment of others and also not to reduce other people by own assessments. Instead of, it is necessary to develop confidence in own abilities, rather than aligning with standards, guidelines and conventions and to encourage others to do so as well. And, above all, it is to cultivate tolerance and appreciation for the diversity of people, because this is what creates and ensures life quality and prosperity.
