When a sense of finality comes and it’s time to begin departing, the quiet goodbye begins—and with it, the sense of loss, of an unwelcome end that cannot be stopped. As I get older, goodbye is harder because there is less to walk into as a future and hope. Aging feels like a long, darkening corridor where all the doors are closing quietly, immutably, and irrevocably. This is not a happy season of my life, though I am searching for silver linings wherever I may find them.
