With the surrealism of Dali and the apocalyptic visions of Francis Ford Coppola, Hugo Barros hand-cuts segments from primary- and secondary- source images and combines them together to create these powerful juxtapositions. Whether the subject matters are unaware sunbathers’ blue skies being severely interrupted by burning meteors, or children running gaily through the hilltops and into utter annihilation, Barros has a way of venerating the end of the world with neither vulgarity nor promiscuity.

Alongside his consistency for running themes, namely Space Invasions and The Apocalypse, Barros sticks to a familiar style. The completed collages have a distinct vintage appeal; the quality and combination of colours, as well as the compositions themselves, have an air of 60s sci-fi movie stills. Though, the photographic “perfect thirds” of the Portuguese artists’ work is often replaced with a more modern triangular angle, giving a great range of compositions to his portfolio. Owing to his chosen method of analogue art, an attentive eye will spot sections of some collages being reused in various ways, reminding us that it is still possible to create the good, old-fashioned way; by hand.
