Ares, Greek god of warfare, was considered at the same time an ephitome and the pinnacle of perfect manliness and someone to be distrusted at all times. He was both the inspirer of courage and fear in battle, and embodied the most physical and violent aspects of warfare, in contrast to Athene’s most strategic side.

Here he is portrayed with an Hellenic shield and spear behind- war is both the art of defense and attack... a dark aura of terror drips off his shoulders and wild hair, his expression is tense, almost discontent at his temporary stillness, and his physique is imposing, statuesque.
