Vicars Close, situated in the city of Wells, Somerset, is reputed to be the oldest purely residential street in Europe. It was built in the 14th century to house the Vicars Choral who sang in the adjacent cathedral. Now the 27 Grade 1 listed buildings house the present choristers together with organists and vergers.
