The Grand Canal of Venice is congested by various types of boats. The blue wat er is walled on ei- ther side by palazzos, most of which were built during the 14th-18th centuries. Gondolas are poled along the canal toward the Ponte Rialt o, a covered bridge constructed in 1588-92, and known more for its strength than its beauty.
