„Danube Big Canyon“

from the gallery of Marius G. Mihalache Michel
Description:

The Danube River forms here one of its canyons and is 4 km long. On one side of the river (in front of us) is Veliki Strbac Mount (768M) - in the country of Serbia. In the left of the photo you can see, split up by the Danube - The "Ciucarul Mic" Mount, and in the right - The "Ciucarul Mare" Mount (316 m) - on the Romanian land.
In this mountain, only accessible on water, is The Cave "Veterans" - it was inhabited more than 4,000 years ago by primitive man. Dacians (people from Dacia country - Romania country before the invasion of the Roman Empire) used it for worshiping to the old god Zamolxis. Romans made in the cave a small fortress with the name "Peth." After then, with the pass of time, Turks and Austrians have used it for military purposes.
In the riverbed of the canyon was once the old village 'Dubova'. After the construction in downstream of the river of a hydroelectric power plants the canyon was flooded and the little town was resettled there from where I make the photo. So... water reaching the entrance of these caves (water depth in the right of the cave's is 100 meters and the mountain wall only 200 feet above these caves.
There are other caves, one of them with the name 'Ponicova', with a length of 1660 meters, also accessible from the water, that crosses the mountain, in two way (two floors / passages) to the other side of the mountain, on dry land.
The mountain and cave's is known for the most populated area of vipers and horned vipers from Romania... and for quiet mornings and very beautiful landscapes.
